Middle Methods
In my Middle Methods course, I developed a strong foundation for using the arts as an active, meaningful process for learning at the middle school level. The course combined experiential learning with theoretical frameworks, helping me deepen my understanding of creativity, critical thinking, and the role of visual culture in art education. We explored a range of pedagogical approaches rooted in critical theory and connected these ideas to our own studio practices as emerging art educators.
As part of the clinical component, I worked directly in a middle school classroom, teaching a group of eight 7th grade students with support from an assistant teacher. For my solo-taught lesson, I designed and implemented Mutant Munchies: Hero Identity Poster Card, a project that invited students to creatively explore identity through character design, symbolism, and visual storytelling. This experience allowed me to apply course concepts in real time—planning engaging lessons, differentiating for diverse learners, and building a positive and supportive learning environment for young adolescent artists.
Overall, the course and clinical experience strengthened my skills as both an artist and educator, preparing me to teach thoughtfully, inclusively, and creatively in middle-level art classrooms.
